Reviewing Week 4 Games & Picks
OOOOO Baby are we getting HOT! The Huddle went 3-0 last week to bring our season record to 9-7. JMU made us sweat a little bit, after getting out to a 24-0 lead the Dukes let the Aggies get back into it and tying up the game at 38 midway through the 4th Quarter. JMU scored and held off Utah St to bring us home with a 7 point victory (they were favored by 4.5). Notre Dame lost on a couple pretty big blunders on the final defensive drive. The Irish had a 4 point lead, dropped a fairly easy interception and then only had 10 men on the field for the last two plays of the game when Ohio State was on the 2 yard line. Ohio State punched it in and ended up wining by 3, which mean the Irish still covered as 3.5 point underdogs! BYU and Kansas had a back and forth game with a lot of points, which is exactly what we wanted to see, covered the over 54.5 points early in the 4th Quarter! Lets continue the momentum into Week 5!
Lot of entertaining games last week, quick run through. OU had a tough battle with Cincy but won by 2 TDs, OU is quietly having a really good season sitting at 4-0 and ranked 14. TCU won handily to keep the Iron Skillet in Fort Worth. Florida State and Clemson went to OT where the Noles came out on top, it’s been a tough season for Clemson so far - but Florida State certainly looks like a legit playoff contender. Bama beat Ole Miss 24-10, neither team looked particularly sharp - but Jalen Milroe got the start again and is clearly better than Bama’s other options, but it’s not great. Oregon WHOOPED Deion’s Colorado Buffs. 42-6 final score with Colorado’s lone score coming in the last 3 minutes of the game. Under 200 yards of total offense for the Buffs and it’s not going to get better with USC coming to Boulder this weekend. I misspoke and said Utah was getting their QB back, he practiced but did not play against UCLA. The Utes Defense is too good and beat the Bruins 14-7. An amazing game between the Arkansas Razorbacks and the LSU tigers ended with a Tiger FG to win the game by 3 (albeit, as 17.5 point favorites). A tough start to the season for Arkansas, we’ll see if Sam Pittman can keep his guys motivated the rest of the way. The PAC-2 matchup between Oregon St and Washington St was a good battle with Oregon St putting up 3 TDs in the 4th Quarter to pull within 3, but they couldn’t quite close the gap. Look out for Cam Ward, Washington State’s QB, he’s having a really good year so far and if he can keep putting up good numbers against the better PAC-12 teams, he might get into the Heisman conversation. Penn State beat Iowa handily, 31-0 - More on Iowa later. We’re in full swing of the season now, conference matchups as far as the eye can see - enjoy it!
The Warm Up
Some Content to get the blood flowing
Tough look for ND but here’s the broadcast counting up only 10 defenders on the field for the crucial end game against Ohio State.
Deion’s Buffs talked a lot of trash to Oregon as they warmed up and even stomped on the O at midfield in Eugene. Here’s a clip of some of that. It was pretty nice to see the Ducks handle business and get the Buffs to quiet down for a little bit.
Some of the college social media teams like to make weird graphics to hype up a game, but we might need to give the USC media team a geography lesson. They included the Yellowstone sign in the graphic when they’re traveling to Boulder, CO this weekend…Yellowstone is 511 miles (8+ Hour drive) from Boulder.

The Scouting Report
Story lines to watch in Week 5
Absolutely insane story I saw this week about Miami TE Cam McCormick - he plans on petitioning with the NCAA for his NINTH YEAR of College Football eligibility. He has a career length that matches some NFL careers. The first SEVEN years of his career were spent at Oregon, then with injuries, covid, and some other eligibility rules he might be able to stretch his career to a 9th year. He’s been playing college ball since 2016, I think it might be time for the 25 year old to move on, but maybe he’s working on a PHD.
Staying in the realm of Older gentlemen playing college football, Virginia has a 34 year old kicker. Matt Ganyard was a Marine Helicopter pilot for over a decade before returning to UVA to get his MBA and play some football. He looks like he could be on the coaching staff. I don’t think he’s actually attempted a kick in a game, but he does have 1 career tackle. And regardless, is still a pretty cool story.
A hilarious story to keep track of: Brian Ferentz, Iowa’s Offensive Coordinator, has an interesting clause in his contract. Ferentz needs the Hawkeye offense (which is typically awful) to average 25 points per game (325 points for the season) otherwise his contract gets terminated. Bud Elliot, a CBS College Football analyst, took it upon himself to project out how this scoring should go game by game and redistributes the point totals when they come up short. As you can see below, that’s already happened 3 times already, future is bleak for Ferentz, unless they can start putting up some points.
Mel Tucker was finally fired, with cause, from Michigan State following his Sexual Harassment allegations. This will save MSU around $80M that was left on his contract. Since this news broke, the Spartans lost 41-7 to Washington and 31-7 to Maryland. The Spartans might’ve quit, now I’m not trusting Iowa to score enough to cover against them, but keep that tucked away for later.
Gambling Picks
My picks and leans for the week
Trap Games are games in which there’s an obvious pick but the line (amount a team is favored by) is hovering around a “football number”. This is typically a multiple of 7 or 10 because of touchdowns and field goals. Example: Georgia is a 14.5 point favorite over Auburn this weekend, so Georgia would have to win by 15 or more points to cover the spread - which sounds easy for the Bulldogs, but this leads me to believe Vegas knows something I don’t and entice me to bet the Bulldogs. Then the Auburn Tigers would keep this within 2 Touchdowns - Hence the Trap. Shoutout to team member Sam Blow for sounding the Trap Alarm.
USC 1st Half (-13) - The Ducks made this look easy last week against Colorado. I expect USC to do the same, but don’t trust them to cover the full game spread of over 3 Touchdowns, especially if Colorado keeps leaving in some starters for the whole game. But look for the trojans to be up 2 scores going into halftime. This game kicks off at 11AM CST which is 10AM Local and 9AM for the Trojans which is just wild. Catch it on FOX.
Louisville (-3.5) - Ideally this will drop to 3 and get us to a football number. Louisville has looked strong this year and NC State has yet to cover a spread. Look for Louisville to go into Raleigh and win by at least a FG. This game is Tonight! Friday 6PM CST, ESPN
Kansas/Texas Over 61 - 2 Good offenses and at least 1 questionable defense gives me some faith that this one will go over. I think Kansas will have shootouts for most of their games. 2:30PM CST on ABC.
Parlay: Illinois/Purdue Under, Texas St/Southern Miss Under, and Oregon/Stanford Under - Our first Parlay of the year should get you 6x. Most of these teams have gone under in 3 of their games so far this year. Put a little on it and see what happens!
If I come up with a pick on any other games, I’ll post those to Twitter. Give me a follow! @HerbiesHuddle
